Strength is Beautiful: Fitness for Teen Girls
A guest post by Miss Teen Boot Camp Coach, Jayme Bergmann, CPT, FMS, on Fitness for Teen Girls
Let’s face it. Being a teenage girl can be hard. There are many things in your life you cannot control. It is likely that you cannot control where you go to school, what kind of hair you have or where you live. But there is something very important that you can control: your fitness.
Your fitness has everything to do with how you take care of your body. What you eat and drink, how much you sleep and how much exercise you get are all things that you control, and they have a profound impact on how you look and feel.
When you eat foods that are unhealthy, drink sodas, habitually go to bed too late and never exercise, you will feel tired and depressed. There is just no way around it; your body can only work with what you give it.
But if you start giving your body what it needs, you will begin to not only feel great, but you will look great too. A teen girl who is healthy, well-rested and strong is beautiful.

Get ready to change your life
It doesn’t matter what your weight is right now or what your habits are: you can start where you are and begin moving toward strength. You will be surprised at how quickly you start looking and feeling better.
Here are just a few tips to help start thinking about getting fit.
1. Get plenty of Sleep. As a teen, you need seven to eight hours of sleep each night. Not getting enough sleep can cause you to have trouble concentrating in school, and it can cause mood swings. But that is not all: lack of sleep can cause you to gain weight! When you don’t sleep enough, the hormones that control your feelings of hunger and fullness get disrupted, so that you feel more hunger.
2. Watch out for High Fructose Corn Syrup. This sweetener is found in many of the prepackaged snacks or drinks that you may reach for. It tastes great, but researchers have found that consuming high fructose corn syrup can cause extra belly fat to accumulate. It also can make your blood sugar levels spike up, and when they come back down it makes you feel bad.
Belly fat and feeling rotten are two great reasons to stop eating this sweetener. Just read the label before you eat or drink something. If it has high fructose corn syrup in it, choose something else.

3. Build Muscle. Building muscle is smart for several reasons.
- It looks great on teen girls. Firm muscles on your arms and legs are beautiful.
- If you have more muscle, you will just feel better. You will have more energy and not get tired as easily.
- Muscle burns calories! The more muscle you have, the more calories you will burn, even when you are not exercising. Want to burn calories while sitting in study hall? Build muscle!
Building muscle is a very simple process, and we will help you do this in our boot camp.
4. Bring Your Lunch. The food choices in your school cafeteria are probably not healthy. But if you are hungry, and that is all you have, you will be tempted to eat it. Instead, pack your own delicious lunch. A grilled chicken salad with nuts, fruit and cheese will give you loads of energy for hours, and you will feel great.
We will talk about good nutrition choices in our boot camp, so you will know
5. Exercise. When you get your heart rate up by exercising, all sorts of wonderful things start happening in your body. Your mood improves, you feel more positive, you can think more clearly, sleep more deeply and you can melt away extra pounds that you may be carrying.

By the way, our Miss Teen Boot Camp is designed to get teen girls on the track towards strength and beauty, and the best part is…you don’t have to do it alone. We will be right beside you every step of the way encouraging you, challenging you and celebrating with you when you see your body and mind changing right before your eyes.
Remember: no matter what shape you are in right now, you are in a perfect place to start getting fit. Start now and get ready for a whole new you by spring!
