Have you ever known someone who just excels? It really doesn’t matter what they decide to do; they just get it done with excellence.
Do they know something that you don’t?
Maybe. And it has a lot to do with boiling water…
Think about it. What is the difference between water that is just about to boil and water that is boiling? One degree of heat. But what a difference that one degree makes.
The Extra Degree
In a popular video called 212o: The Extra Degree, Sam Parker and Mac Anderson vividly demonstrate the difference between good and great, acceptable and exceptional. And it comes down to passion and effort.
Just like the difference between hot water and boiling water is a little more heat, the difference between mediocrity and excellence is passion. Are you passionate?
It is hard to give your all to something you are not passionate about. Achieving excellence requires hard work and a commitment to seeing a thing through in spite of setbacks and disappointments.
There will be disappointments. And when these disappointments come, Mediocrity says, “It’s too hard. I can’t do this.” But Excellence says, “I see what went wrong. I will win the next race.” And that makes all the difference.
But you have to want it.
How Bad do You Want it?
That is a deceptive question, for it assumes that you know what “it” is. It assumes you know where you are heading. It assumes you have a target.
If your goals are vague and undefined, then you will be paralyzed. You will have a general sense that you need to be doing something, but with no clear target in front of you, you will not know where to aim. The result will be months of busyness but no accomplishment: hot water that never boils.
Your first step then is to decide what you want.
- Do you want to lose several pounds?
- Do you want to get strong?
- Do you want to create new habits that will up level your success in the coming year?
Don’t overwhelm yourself with a long list. Just pick something that you are passionate about–something that will change your life once you accomplish it. The passion is crucial, for that is what will raise the heat that one degree that will make all the difference. It is what will ensure your victory.
Set Goals
Now that you have your target, the next step is to set some goals that will help you get there. It is crucial to remember that, as Parker and Anderson point out in their video:
“To get what we’ve never had, we must do what we’ve never done.”
Successful people do not keep doing the same thing over and over again while expecting different results. You must do something different to get to a different place.
So take a long, hard look at what you need to do to hit your target, and then break it down into many small goals. Having many small goals cuts right through the fog and opens a path to your success.

Don’t just set another bogus New Year’s Resolution with no real thought or plan of action. Set clear, concrete goals that you can take action on and measure your results. Then figure out all the necessary supporting tasks you’ll need to get done…
For example, let’s assume your goal is to perform a high-intensity interval training workout every day for 30 minutes. What do you have to do to make that happen? Perhaps you have to get up earlier. Fair enough. But what has to happen in order for you to get up earlier? You have to go to bed earlier. And what has to happen in order for you to go to bed earlier? Perhaps you need to get the kids in bed earlier. And what has to happen in order for you to get the kids in bed earlier? Supper needs to be ready earlier. And so on.
As it turns out, working out every day is going to require some hard work. Some heat. Do you want it badly? Then here are some small goals for our example situation:
- Plan your menus a week in advance and get the groceries into the house.
- Start supper as soon as you get home from work.
- Let the kids eat supper in their pajamas so getting them in bed is easier.
- Go to bed earlier.
- Get up earlier.
- Work out in the morning.
Work on your goals one by one. If you fall down, then get up, figure out what went wrong and keep moving.
You can do this. The only thing standing between you and your goal is the will to just do it, one step at a time.
Choose excellence.
