Exercise Benefits for Teen Girls
A Special Guest Post About the Benefits of Exercise for Teen Girls by Jayme Bergmann, CPT, FMS
We’re excited around here about our Miss Teen Boot Camp! We want to help as many teen girls as possible get fit, get strong and get healthy.

The Problem
Did you know that 17% of children and teens in America are overweight or obese? Further, overweight children are likely to become overweight adults. Overweight children and adolescents are a growing problem that has reached the status of an epidemic in our country.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, the dangers of obesity for children and teens are many. Among these include:
- Increased risk of cardio vascular disease due to high cholesterol and high blood pressure
- Increased risk of developing insulin resistance and Type 2 Diabetes
- Breathing complications such as sleep apnea and asthma
- Joint problems
- Heartburn, gallstones and fatty liver disease
- Greater risk for social and psychological problems
The Solution
It doesn’t have to be this way. Ours is the first generation to see such an explosion in adolescent weight gain. But it isn’t too late to turn it around, one child at a time.
That is why we want to partner with you to help your teen girl establish healthy fitness and eating habits that will carry her all the way into adulthood. That is why we have developed the Miss Teen Boot Camp.
You have probably heard that there are many benefits of exercise for teen girls, such as better sleep and more energy. But there are also some benefits that you may not be aware of:
- Help with acne. Acne is a part of being a teen, but exercise can help. Because exercise increases blood flow to the skin, oxygen is delivered to the skin more efficiently. This reduces acne and can prevent future outbreaks. The increased blood flow will also help acne heal more rapidly, as well as help fade scars from previous outbreaks.
- Menstrual relief. Teen girls struggle with monthly cramps and mood swings. Did you know that exercise can help with this too? Painful cramps are helped by the natural pain-killing properties of the endorphins that are released by exercise. And because exercise helps release water from the body, bloating will be less of an issue for teens who work out. Add the mood-stabilizing effects of the brain chemicals that aerobic exercise produces, and you have a prescription for monthly-management!
- Better grades. It seems too good to be true, but exercise will help your teen daughter do better in school. In his book Spark, The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain, Harvard Psychiatrist Dr. John Ratey notes that in 2001, fit kids scored twice as well on academic tests as unfit kids. He writes that when students go for a mile run, “they are more prepared to learn in their other classes: their senses are heightened; their focus and mood are improved; they’re less fidgety and tense; and they feel more motivated and invigorated…In addition to priming our state of mind, exercise influences learning directly, at the cellular level, improving the brain’s potential to log in and process new information.”
