8 Out of 10 Teen Girls Would Like to Be More Fit

A Post On Teen Fitness for Girls by Justin Yule, BS, CPT, FMS

According to a study from the University of Bath, 8 out of 10 teen girls would like to be more fit.  This means that out of every 10 girls, only 2 are happy with their weight and fitness levels!

The teen years are full of changes and pressures, from hormonal changes to academic responsibilities to peer pressure.  Adding discontent with physical appearance makes all the other stresses of adolescence that much harder.  Being overweight and unfit can cause a teen to suffer ridicule from others and a poor self-esteem from within.  Ridicule and poor self-esteem are a deadly combination, and the effects can stay with a teen girl throughout her entire life.

With a poor self-esteem, a teen girl will likely not have the confidence needed to reach her full potential.  Trying new things and setting challenging goals requires a certain belief in one’s ability to succeed and a belief in one’s worth.  A teen girl beaten down from the outside and the inside will simply not have the motivation or inclination to push herself forward.

How can a fitness program help?

Nothing breeds success like success.  A successful fitness program can be just the spark a teen girl needs…Few things compare with the sense of accomplishment that a teen girl will feel when she begins sticking with an exercise routine.  Long before any measurable physical results begin showing up, there will be a transformation taking place in her mind.  She’s doing this.  She is working out and succeeding at something that, until now, has seemed only possible for ‘other’ girls to pull off.  This spark of accomplishment will translate into a confidence that will begin affecting all other areas of her life.

She will begin having the courage to try other things and to take a few more chances with herself and the possibilities of what she is capable of will expand.  And this transformation will be coming from within—from her own assessment of herself, rather than from an external source.

This internal motivation will carry her far, because she will not be dependent on others for it.  She controls this.

Of course the physical changes will come, and they will be profound and useful in their own right.  But even before that, she will begin finding strength and resolve within that will change her life.

What can parents do?

In a very real way, your daughter’s success depends on you.  Will you commit to signing her up for an exercise program, getting her there each day, and encouraging her to keep pushing forward?  Your support will make or break her success.

Here are some tips to get both of you off to a great start:

  • Decide to workout at home with your daughter.  A huge predictor of whether teen girls work out is whether their parents do– particularly their mothers!
  • Offer incentives.  Provide rewards to your daughter for accomplishing certain (reasonable) fitness goals each week.  These could be cash, movie nights, later curfew or a day out with a friend.
  • Purchase workout attire.  Take your daughter shopping for some fashionable and comfortable workout attire.  This will help her feel more at ease when working out around others, and it will also show her your commitment to her success.
  • Encourage her to find a workout buddy.  Having a friend to workout with can make all the difference.  Accountability partners are the number one determiner of whether a person succeeds in his or her fitness goals.

We are committed to helping your daughter now, with habits that will last her entire life.  Help us help her be part of that percentage of teen girls who are content with their level of fitness, so they can have the focus to reach their full potential!  Check out our Miss Teen Boot Camp TODAY!
